Stories and strategies of women living with Female Genital Mutilation in Auckland communities (2015)

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore stories of women living with FGM in Auckland and to capture the strategies they propose for addressing FGM with a focus on Somali,Eritrean Indonesian and Kurdish communities
Study Population: Somali,Eritrean Indonesian and Kurdish women
Findings: The participants were keen on sharing their personal stories through research. Those who remembered the experience (2 women) spoke of physical and emotional trauma of the event. All discussed long-term socio-cultural and health effects. There was discussion about the strategies and they mainly consider education as a central to prevention. Also the law is seen as a deterrent to FGM but they little knowledge about the rights debate.
