Female genital mutilation (2003)

This study is a Exploratory research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): Bransfield Elizabeth FGM/C Type(s): All Health area of focus: None. Objective: To provide a comprehensive overview of its medical and health implications, its definitions, and the debate ranging around the practice in anthropological, developmental, theoretical and feminist perspectives. Secondly, the propagation of the practice within immigrant communities Study Population: Relied on legal cases Findings: The study showed that FGM/C is no longer confined to the 23 African countries where it has been prevalent for centuries but commonly practiced among certain African migrants in Western settings where legislation prohibits it. Arguments abound as to its precise roots: male domination in a patriarchal society played an important part, yet so does the propagation of the practice by women themselves, and the fact that the practice has been transplanted abroad with a modicum of success. Claims of the practice’s importance as a cultural signifier neglect to consider the core significance of FGM – mutilation. The second case study shows, many second generation immigrant children no longer undergo the ordeal of mutilation,as the pressure of the old society ease in their new environments. Nor do African countries sit still: if once there were accusations of Western ideology and colonialist forces behind the opposition to FGM (causing much resentment) now it is Africans themselves, from grassroots level and up to government itself, which are fighting to eradicate the process – by means of education,as well as law Geographical coverage Region(s):Not specified Country(ies):Not specified Source

Female Genital Mutilation (2008)

This study is a Descriptive research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): Teresa Ball FGM/C Type(s): All Health area of focus: None. Objective: To examines female genital mutilation and describes how a midwifery-led clinic was developed to meet the needs of women affected by this practice Study Population: Women Findings: Continued clinical involvement with women and their families has been invaluable in understanding more about the issue and assisting them to consider change. Specialist services for affected women appear to be scarce and limited to certain areas of the country. Staff from other hospitals frequently contacts the trust to request information and guidance about appropriate care. It is encouraging that service providers outside the larger cities are considering the needs of their local communities. Aside from the specific health and social needs that must be considered, all members of the community should examine their knowledge of and attitudes towards FGM and learn more about it to move towards its eradication in the UK. This includes campaigning in schools, mosques and the media to denounce he practice,as well as stricter implementation of the law as a means of conveying the message that the practice is unacceptable Geographical coverage Region(s):Northern Europe Country(ies):United Kingdom Source

Female genital mutilation — a blind spot in Dutch general practice? A case–control study (2021)

This study is a Descriptive research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): Kawous R,Kerimova N,van den Muijsenbergh ME. FGM/C Type(s): All Health area of focus: Frequency of GPs registering FGM/C and related health problems.. Objective: To investigate how often Dutch GPs register FGM/C and related health problems. Study Population: Women patient records Findings: Although many migrants were registered with the participating GPs,information on country of origin was seldom recorded. Only 68 out of 16 700 patients were identified as women from countries where FGM/C is practised; 12 out of these 68 records contained information about the FGM/C status, but none on the type of FGM/C. There were no significant differences in health problems related to FGM/C between patients with FGM/C and the controls. Conclusion FGM/C may be a blind spot for GPs and registration of information on migration background could be improved. A larger sample in a future study is needed to confirm this finding. Given the growing global migration, awareness and knowledge on FGM/C,and other migration-related health issues should be part of GP training. The majority of previous research has focused on FGM/C in maternity settings. There is a need for more research on FGM/C in primary care such as general practice.1 This is the first study to investigate the provision of health care to women with FGM/C in Dutch general practice. There are numerous recognized repercussions that can be divided into two categories: immediate and long-term. In the literature, treatment choices are not extensively documented, and published research are of poor quality. Despite this, there are numerous treatment methods and guidelines for FGM-affected women. To successfully treat women with FGM,health care professionals should be knowledgeable and sympathetic. They should also educate women of potential repercussions and legal considerations. Female Genital Mutilation – Truths and Lies (2014)

This study is a Exploratory research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): Athanasia Zagorianou FGM/C Type(s): All Health area of focus: None. Objective: Examines and analyzes the controversial issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). With goal to find the truths and the lies around the issue, this article provides a description and an analysis of important factual information regarding the practices of FGM and its (FGM’s) relation to the cultural and religious norms of a society Study Population: not stated Findings: Based on the factual data and the discussion on FGM’s origins,it becomes obvious that FGM does not have any actual religious basis. Although it is referred to as a society’s cultural or religious custom through the study of the relevant academic literature,I reached the conclusion that FGM derives mostly from outdated beliefs of individuals. These beliefs have been passed and preserved over the years in many civilizations and as a result have become an integral part of people’s lives and cultural traditions. In many cases, the refusal of a woman to be subjected to FGM is the reason why she can be refused the chance to be educated, get married and finds a job as FGM practices have been associated with a woman’s purity, cleanliness, maturity and absolute obedience to her husband. Even though international human rights laws as well as some domestic treaties have promoted and prohibited these practices against women,it is a fact that FGM is still apparent in many countries of the contemporary world.
