Evidence-based policy responses to strengthen health, community and legislative systems that care for women in Australia with female genital mutilation /cutting (2017)

This study is a Descriptive research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): Varol,N.,Hall,J. J.,Black,K.,Turkmani,S.,& Dawson,A. FGM/C Type(s): All Health area of focus: None. Objective: The article reviewed the literature on research on FGM/C in Australia, which focuses on health system response to women and girls with FGM/C. Study Population: Relied on articles Findings: Australian midwives and physicians acknowledged a dearth of understanding regarding FGM/C,clinical guidelines, and the repercussions for maternity care. In an Australian urban hospital with specialized FGM/C care, women with FGM/C had similar obstetric outcomes as women without FGM/C,highlighting the significance of holistic FGM/C clinics. As well as educating communities that practice FGM/C and professionals concerned in the care and protection of children,a greater emphasis on the integration of refugee and migrant populations into their new cultures may be a crucial step towards eradicating this practice. Through a man-to-man strategy with programs focusing on men’s health and other personal issues, education, and communication, men could be effective champions for safeguarding women and girls from abuse and FGM/C. The Australian government has prioritized gender-based violence and is undertaking a national plan to eliminate violence against women and their children from 2010 to 2022. This taskforce might build a multidisciplinary network of experts on FGM/C to develop well-defined and speedy referral pathways to care for and safeguard these children,as well as to coordinate education and preventive efforts to assist communities in abandoning this destructive practice. Expectations and experience of labial reduction: a qualitative study (2007)

This study is a Descriptive research regarding IV FGM/C with the following characteristics: Author(s): R Bramwell,C Morland, and AS Garden FGM/C Type(s): IV Health area of focus: Sexual. Objective: To understand women’s reasons for undergoing labial reduction surgery, their expectations and experiences Study Population: Women who had experienced surgery for labial reduction Findings: The women had seen their presurgery genital appearance as ‘defective’ and sought a ‘normal’ genital appearance. They thought that their presurgery genital appearance impacted on their sex lives, but their expectations of the effects of surgery on their sex lives were not all fulfilled. Information about labial surgery came from both the popular media and the health services. An emphasis on,for example, physical discomfort rather than appearance may have been used to legitimise a request for surgery. The process of accessing surgery had exposed them to potentially conflicting messages about their genital appearance. The study concluded that women presenting for labial reduction may have unrealistic expectations of surgery, but their perceptions and expectations are long-standing and seem to be based on strong cultural norms.
