(2018). Qualitative evaluation of the Saleema campaign to eliminate female genital mutilation and cutting in Sudan. Reproductive Health,15(1). https://doi.org/10.1186/s12978-018-0470-2
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.
Objective: The primary aim was to explore perceptions of the Saleema poster exemplars and to assess if the desired themes were being communicated. Secondary aims were to understand more about participants’ information sources, values, and suggestions for the campaign broadly.
Study Population: Community members
Findings: Local leaders, media, and community debates were the most prevalent sources of information or appreciation, according to participants. Participants valued education,community,and/or religion. Participants liked Saleema and the campaign’s branding components. Continued awareness was most common. To highlight the harms of FGM,advocates, trainers, and posters were suggested. People proposed targeting older women and villagers. The campaign also targeted youth. This focus group study supports future Saleema awareness and engagement campaigns. The campaign could work with young people and community leaders (e.g.,religious leaders) or continue promoting education and communal values. Continuing campaigns could reduce FGM’s consequences in Sudan.
