The practice of Female Genital Mutilation among the rural Malays in North Malaysia (2009)

Objective:  The purpose of this study was to determine the practice of FGM among the Malays living in a rural region of north Malaysia
Study Population: Women
Findings: 597 women who experienced FGM were interviewed and they cited religion as the main reason for the practice. It was commonly performed by a traditional practitioner of the art called ‘Mak Bidan’,but the more recent FGM were done in clinics by doctors (P=0.000). All female adults interviewed wanted the practice to go on (P=0.05).
