Author(s): Nchagwa,R. R.
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.

Objective: This study sought to understand the social and economic drivers that influence the persistence of FGM/C among the Abakuria.
Study Population: The Abakuria of Migori County
Findings: The persistence of FGM/C was influenced by social and economic variables. The social causes included the necessity to adhere to the social “order” of FGM/C,the stigma associated with nonconformity, social pressures,FGM/C as a precondition for marriage, and the perceptions of a woman’s sexuality. The economic factors included the financial advantage associated with the increased value of circumcised women, particularly after marriage,as well as the financial gain for practitioners. Despite the fact that many societies have criminalized FGM/C,socioeconomic obstacles impede the fight against the practice. It is proposed that stakeholders hold consultation meetings in a participative manner to garner community support for abandoning the practice.
