Author(s): Abathun,A. D.,Sundby,J. & Gele,A. A.
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the pupils’ perspectives on FGC abandonment in the Harari and the Somali Regional States of Ethiopia where the prevalence of the practice was thought to be high.
Study Population: Girls and Boys who are attending primary and secondary schools from the selected schools.
Findings: Participants who got information from numerous channels were significantly more likely to favor the abolition of FGC than those who received information from a single source (p< 0.05). Similarly, the findings suggested that school-based awareness programs and television-based media communications were the primary sources of information that persuaded a large majority of young people to favor the practice's abolition. Multiple information channels, including school-based awareness initiatives, were determined to be the most effective means of combating FGC. Although the study demonstrates a significant increase in the awareness of the adverse effects of female genital cutting (FGC) among school-aged girls and boys,it may be difficult to eradicate the practice entirely due to its deep-rooted nature. Thus,in order to control the evolution of female genital cutting (FGC) in the aforementioned regional states,a variety of activities aimed at altering the attitudes of young people towards the practice must be implemented. In this regard,school-based education, school mini-media,social media, and the use of co-curricular activities to reveal the danger of this detrimental habit could play key roles in altering students' attitudes toward it.
