Objective: To provide an overview of the most recent statistics on FGM,the serious short-term and long-term physical,obstetric and psychological complications,defibulation technique and the law in South Africa
Study Population: None
Findings: FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Despite efforts by international organizations to eliminate the practice it continues to be performed in many mainly African countries. More efforts are required to eliminate this ancient practice. The improvement of women’s socioeconomic status as well as informative programs targeting both local communities and the international public opinion are important in the attempt to eradicate the practice of FGM and its consequences on women’s health
