Objective: To explore nursing care given to patients with FGM,in the US in order to create greater awareness of FGM,for nurses,and midwives within the United States,enlighten nurses and midwives regarding the physical and mental repercussions of FGM. In addition,the study aims to develop new nursing protocols and screening tools for FGM patients and their daughters
Study Population: Nurses
Findings: The study revealed three themes throughout the responses of our survey. Those three themes were procedure modifications,individualized therapeutic conversation,and cultural incompetency. Exam modifications included slower pelvic exams with the suggested use of a pediatric speculum and emla cream or lidocaine for the simpliest of procedures as well as the use of interpreters. Individualized therapeutic care includes but is not limited to,discussion of antenatal defibulaiton well before labor begins. Individualized education of future procedures will help eliminate ignorance amount the healthcare profession
