Urological complications in women with genital mutilation (2018)

Objective: This study was a comprehensive review of literature regarding urological complications associated with female genital mutilation and its impact on women’s quality of life.
Study Population: Relied on articles
Findings: Twenty percent of women undergoing genital mutilation are affected by urological problems. Recurrent urinary tract infections,lower urinary tract symptoms,urine retention,urogenital fistulas,meatus stenosis,urethral stones,and megaurethra are among the reported conditions. The incidence of urological problems is proportional to the severity of female genital mutilation. The greatest risk of postoperative urological issues is associated with Type III FGM (narrowing of the vaginal opening by creating a covering seal by cutting and relocating the labia minora or labia majora).
