Author(s): Glover,J.,Liebling,H.,Barrett,H.,& Goodman,S.
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: Mental health/psychological impact.
Objective: The research aimed to gain an understanding of women’s experiences of FGM to develop an evidence based holistic conceptual
framework for professionals dealing with the impact of FGM and responses required for survivors and their children
Study Population: Women
Findings: Novel findings emerged from this research regarding factors that enhanced women’s psychological resilience. Data analysis revealed luck, sense of duty, empowerment, and resistance as important factors in enhancing resilience and these have also been emphasised in wider research into gender-based violence. This paper argues that resilience is influenced by fear, different stages of women’s lives, limited service provision and lack of a culturally sensitive holistic approach. Resilience can be enhanced by increasing flexible social and psychological support for FGM survivors,in the form of individual and group therapy.
