The practice of Female Genital Circumcision in Malaysia (2012)

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and describe the practice of FC in Malaysia.
Study Population: Mothers and daughters
Findings: Results showed a total 1,196 females responded to the survey. Sixty two percent of the Muslim females had daughters (671 of 1,086 respondents); with the total number of daughters studied was 1,302. Females who had been circumcised were observed to circumcise their daughter; p < 0.001. The most common reason for practicing circumcision was religious obligation (82.2%),for hygienic purpose (41.3%) and as part of cultural practices (31.9%). In conclusion,the practice of FC in Malaysia is a common practice among the Malays. The procedure was observed to be a minor procedure with no adverse effects. The role of GP is becoming important while traditional midwives continue to practice.
