Review of Current Research on the Health of Refugees and Asylum-Seekers in Ireland (2001)
This study is a Exploratory research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics:
Author(s): Sarah Delaney and Hannah McGee
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.
Objective: To provide some basic information about the nature of the practice (FGM) and its relevance to particular ethnic groups in Ireland
Study Population: NA
Findings: FGM in Ireland was found to be an under-researched issue. Although the phenomenon of FGM was not believed to be common in Ireland, the extremely complex ethical and moral issues surrounding it meant that any initiative introduced in the future had to be backed up by a considerable body of research and planning. Available research suggested that the most effective approach to tackling FGM is based on participatory and community development backed up by legislation. If legislation was introduced in isolation, there was a considerable danger that children would be sent abroad to undergo the procedure,or,worse,be subjected to ‘back-street’ circumcision in Ireland.
