Prioritizing and synthesizing evidence to improve the health care of girls and women living with female genital mutilation: An overview of the process (2017)

This study is a Exploratory research regarding All FGM/C with the following characteristics:

Author(s): Stein,K.,Hindin,M. J.,Chou,D.,& Say,L.
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.

Objective: The study aimed to inform WHO’s first evidence-based guidelines recommendations on the management of health complications from FGM.
Study Population: Relied on articles
Findings: FGM affects girls and women greatly. It’s part of females’ culturally-defined gender identity. On the other hand,it’s a kind of violence against girls and women with devastating physical and psychosexual consequences. This Supplement’s evidence syntheses informed the WHO Guidelines on the Management of Health Complications from FGM. These guidelines help enhance policies, programs, and clinical practice. Guideline details how evidence syntheses were used. This extensive assessment and synthesis of the literature emphasized the paucity of evidence on how to meet the needs of the millions of women and girls living with FGM. Few effective interventions are known, and most resources are focused on primary prevention. From the first literature scan,PICO questions were constructed to cover evidence gaps. As experts classified all questions as vital or critical, extensive efforts are needed to discover the most effective evidence-based solutions. The evidence is of low quality. It is expected that the knowledge gaps highlighted can be used to build research protocols that will enrich the evidence in this subject.
