Objective: To determine the extent of the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in parts of Central and Southern Iraq

Findings: The existence and prevalence of female genital mutilation in the Kurdistan region of Iraq was proved and acknowledged through statistical surveys. Before,it was denied and surrounded by complete silence. The results documented the need for legal action in Iraqi Kurdistan and laid ground for a legal framework designed to curb the practice and criminalize it
