Author(s): Teresa Ball
FGM/C Type(s): All
Health area of focus: None.
Objective: To examines female genital mutilation and describes how a midwifery-led clinic was developed to meet the needs of women affected by this practice
Study Population: Women
Findings: Continued clinical involvement with women and their families has been invaluable in understanding more about the issue and assisting them to consider change. Specialist services for affected women appear to be scarce and limited to certain areas of the country. Staff from other hospitals frequently contacts the trust to request information and guidance about appropriate care. It is encouraging that service providers outside the larger cities are considering the needs of their local communities. Aside from the specific health and social needs that must be considered, all members of the community should examine their knowledge of and attitudes towards FGM and learn more about it to move towards its eradication in the UK. This includes campaigning in schools, mosques and the media to denounce he practice,as well as stricter implementation of the law as a means of conveying the message that the practice is unacceptable
