Objective: The aim was to explore the content and availability of education about FGM and its consequences within undergraduate child nursing programmes
Study Population: An online survey and semi-structured interviews were undertaken withchild health academics based at higher education institutions (HEIs) in England and Wales which provided child nurse pre-registration programmes
Findings: The narrative literature review found a lack of research on this topic. The surveys and interviews highlighted wide variations in the level and content of teaching currently provided at HEIs. This included the number of hours allocated specifically to FGM,academic knowledge and confidence on teaching the subject,and resources used to teach students. Variations in the level and content of teaching provided on FGM in the undergraduate curricula,meant wide disparities in the teaching provided to child nursing students. A lack of child-nurse specific literature to consolidate learning was also identified as a barrier to effective teaching.Recommendations to improve teaching include the use of experts and formal assessment of knowledge and skills to standardise teaching practices. Further research is required.
